History of the NAOP “ Nicolaus Copernicus”, Varna

The first astronomical complex in Bulgaria was officially opened on 22 May 1968 in Varna and it consisted of an observatory, a planetarium and a tower with a Foucault pendulum. It was called “ Nicolaus Copernicus”. Executive director of the observatory from its creation till the year of 1989 was Nikolay Petrov. In 1971 began the building of an outpost of the astronomical observatory in the village of Avren . The Youth Astronomical Club “ Canopus ” was founded in the observatory. From the year of 1973 Varna 's Observatory annually organizes the National Youth Astronomical Conference. On 15 August 2002 the Prime Minister Simeon Sax-Cobourg-Gottha officially opened the renovated building of the observatory in the presence of the former member of the Youth Astronomical Club “Canopus” – the Vice Premier Nikolayi Vassilev.
